Founded in 1899 as the Societe Renault Freres, Renault is considered one of the more influential European car companies in the industry. The company was started by the Renault brothers, Louis, Marcel, and Fernand along with friends Thomas Evert and Julian Wyer. The first Renault prototype was the diminutive Voiturette, which was sold to a friend of the family after impressing on a test drive. This led to Renault models being designed for motor racing. Hungarian racecar driver Ferenc Szisz won the first ever Grand Prix in a Renault AK in 1906, helping foster more publicity towards the brand. Renault's lineup grew substantially by the '20s and began to include a range of models from compact sedans to full-size offerings.
World War II and Germany's occupation of France put a halt to the brand, but following the war, Renault hit a resurgence, most notably with models such as the 4CV and the Fregate. Renault released the 4L, its first front-wheel drive vehicle in 1961 and just a year later followed it up with the Renault 8, a compact sedan that stayed in production until the early 1970s. The Renault 5 premiered in 1972 and helped sustain the company through the decade in the midst of the oil crisis that pounded the auto industry. 1990 welcomed in the arrival of the Clio, a subcompact hatchback that would go on to be named the 1991 European Car of the Year and become one of Renault's most successful models.
Other vehicles such as the Laguna and the mini Twingo strengthened Renault's lineup during the early-mid '90s. Renault, previously a state-run operation, privatized in 1996 and shortly after formed an alliance with Nissan Motors. Also in 1996, the Megane-influenced Scenic rolls off the line, garnering European Car of the Year honors. The company enjoyed another boost with the second-generation Megane in 2002, as the versatile vehicle also took home the European Car of the Year award, becoming the fifth Renault to do so and was followed by another European Car of the Year winner a few years later in 2006, when the Clio would become the first Renault model to claim the prize twice.
Renault has always been committed to being revolutionary and inventive without neglecting the principles that drivers find important. Economical, dependable, but always original, this is one European brand that has managed to stay ahead of the pack. When you look closer at your model, you notice something different: the potential for personal style.
